Project Overview
Smart Allowance, also known as CasaHeros, is a comprehensive mobile application designed specifically for families to help parents teach their children valuable financial habits through everyday responsibilities. Rather than just handing out an allowance, this app links money to chores, household rules, saving goals, and progress tracking, providing a structured and engaging way for kids to understand how earning and managing money works in real life.
The product offers two distinct experiences tailored to different users: parents have the ability to manage the family account, assign chores, approve completed tasks, set up rewards and penalties, and monitor their children's progress. Meanwhile, children have their own dedicated space where they can view their assigned chores, complete tasks, track their earnings, and work toward achieving personal savings goals. Separating these experiences was crucial to ensure that parents maintain control and oversight, while children enjoy a simple, motivating, and easy-to-navigate interface.
Additionally, the application incorporates a financial simulation layer that allows families to connect demo bank accounts and simulate allowance transfers, making the learning process more realistic. Beyond chore and allowance management, the app also features notifications, activity tracking, goal progress updates, wishlists, and customizable family settings. The overall design aims to make financial responsibility feel less like a formal lesson and more like a natural part of children’s daily routines, encouraging them to practice money management skills in a fun and practical way.
Chore & Allowance
Parents have the ability to create various chores, assign specific rewards, set detailed schedules, and manage recurring allowances for each of their children.
Approvals & Rewards
Completed chores can be reviewed by parents, with approved tasks automatically adding the corresponding reward to a child's balance.
Goals & Wishlists
Children can create savings goals and add items they want to purchase while visually tracking their progress.
Balance & Activities
Children have the ability to view their current balance as well as detailed information about their earnings, bonuses, penalties, and past activities.
Rules & Penalties
Parents have the ability to establish specific family rules and enforce predetermined deductions whenever those rules are violated or not followed properly.
Family Banking
Demo banking integration allows families to simulate transferring earned allowances into a child's connected account.
The Challenge
The challenge was to create an experience that could work for two very different users. Parents needed detailed controls over money, chores, rules, approvals, and family settings, while children needed something much simpler and more engaging.
The Approach
The product was structured around separate Parent and Kid experiences, with each side focused on the tasks that matter to them. Parent workflows were organized around management and approval, while the child experience focused on completing chores, seeing earnings, and progressing toward goals
The Outcome
Smart Allowance brought chores, allowances, rules, earnings, and saving goals into one connected family experience. Parents get clearer control over how children earn and manage money, while children get a simple way to understand their progress and build better financial habits through everyday actions.

Project Overview
The primary goal was to make financial education practical rather than theoretical. Instead of presenting children with lessons about saving or responsibility, the product turns those concepts into actions they already understand. Completing a chore can result in earnings, reaching a savings target can unlock a reward, and breaking a family rule can have a visible financial consequence. For parents, control and transparency were central business requirements. They need to know what their children are expected to do, what has been completed, how much has been earned, and where adjustments have been made. The Parent experience therefore needed enough detail to support these decisions without becoming unnecessarily complicated.
The child experience required a different approach. Younger users should not have to understand complex financial terminology or navigate dense dashboards to know what they need to do. Chores, balances, goals, and progress were presented in a more visual and straightforward way so children could understand the relationship between their actions and their money. Another important consideration was the banking functionality. Since the initial product uses demo banking through Plaid Sandbox, the experience needed to clearly separate simulated transactions from real financial activity. At the same time, the underlying structure needed to leave room for future integrations with live banking and payment providers without requiring the entire product experience to be rebuilt.
The biggest takeaway from the project is that the value of a family finance product comes from connecting multiple everyday behaviors into one understandable system. Smart Allowance is not simply a chore tracker or an allowance calculator. It brings responsibilities, rewards, consequences, savings, and progress together to create a practical environment where children can gradually learn how money works.
